Chapter Eleven

“And you left me there to inhale those toxic fumes. I have cancer now.” Harry used his wing to poke at Holly’s leg.

“You’re taxidermy, remember? Pretty sure you can’t get cancer or inhale anything for that matter.” Holly shoved a portion of Beignet coated in powdered sugar into her mouth and chewed with eyes closed.

“Considering how toxic that pug’s stomach is, I wouldn’t count on that.”

“Hey, hey. Enough with the pug hating. I can’t help having a sensitive system.” Colin dropped to the floor near Holly’s bed with a low sigh.

“Yes, dear. You saved me.” Elspeth rubbed Colin’s tummy and then sniffed her arm.

Wrinkling her nose, Holly swallowed the last portion of pastry. She opened the folder she’d liberated from Adele’s study before the cops arrived. “Adele and Henrik definitely had a deal going on. If the cops go through their finances, they’ll find lots of corresponding payments.”

“That could be explained. The fuzz will need a direct link between those two, the plantation, and the killer.” Elspeth settled on top of Xandie’s bed.

“Well, Helene certainly thinks there’s a link. I mean, she risked breaking and entering to find that will.”

Elspeth snorted. “That’s greed talking. She wants her family home back. She seems harmless enough, but was it a good idea to send Xandie with her to keep an eye out? Greed makes for unpredictable moves.” Holly’s grandmother brushed the sugar from the Beignet off her chest.

Detective Felix had kept them at the station for the rest of the night and most of the next day interrogating them. Thankfully, the shifter had kept them fed enough throughout the day that all they needed once released was a sugar hit instead of dinner. Holly flicked through the paperwork. “Here’s something interesting.” She held up a small schedule Helene had included in the folder. “Says here Adele had a meeting with Henrik, just before we turned up and found her dead.”

“In the middle of all that lovely mayhem, Arneson could easily have been the one pulling the zombie’s strings. Plus, from what you’ve said, he’s Viking mad. He’d probably know the significance of the knife and understand the carved runes.”

Holly nodded. “Henrik is top of my suspect list, but something’s niggling me. Something I’ve missed.” She shrugged. “I’ll work it out.”

“Worms?” Harry offered.

“What is it with you and health problems?”

“One can’t be too careful, especially when you’re a supernatural creature.”

“You’re a cursed Viking. You don’t have health issues,” Holly growled at Harry.

Harry hopped over to Colin and settled in next to Elspeth’s four-legged minion. “At least the pug respects me.”

“Darn tooting, my feathered friend. Old Colin got your back.”

Ignoring them, Holly held up her phone. “I’ll call Sam and let him know Helene found the will. We couldn’t get hold of him from the police station.”

“Go ahead, death girl. I got to get some beauty sleep before our next foray into New Orleans chaos.”

“I thought you fed on the energy of the innocent?”

Elspeth snorted. “Like that would sustain me in this day and age.
